Bread for the Journey

Read: Matthew 6:25–34

Some mornings, tomorrow arrives before we have finished today’s coffee.

We think about the conversation we need to have, the person we cannot fix, the decision we cannot yet make. Before the day has begun, we are already carrying what might happen next week.

In Matthew 6, Jesus directs our attention to the birds and the flowers. He reminds us that our Father knows what we need. Then He calls us back to today.

There are responsibilities that need our attention. There are people to love, plans to make, and promises to keep. But worry can pull us beyond those responsibilities into trying to control their outcome.

We can prepare for a conversation without rehearsing every possible response. We can care for someone without knowing how their story will unfold. We can take the next faithful step while the steps beyond it remain unclear.

What has God placed before you today?

Perhaps it is a phone call. An apology. A meal to prepare. A task you have been avoiding.

Perhaps it is receiving help when you would rather manage everything yourself.

Begin there. Ask for wisdom. Give that small responsibility your attention, and bring the uncertainty to your Father in prayer.

You do not have to see the whole road to walk faithfully today.

Pause and reflect

What concern about tomorrow is taking your attention away from today? What is one faithful step you can take now?

A prayer

Father, You know what is ahead and what I need today. Help me recognize the responsibilities You have entrusted to me. Give me courage to act, humility to receive help, and trust when I cannot see the outcome. In Jesus’ name, amen.
